Accessible UA-compliant PDF documents – by the NAGIX solution
Over a decade ago, when the issue of Accessible Documents came into focus, in many countries and especially in Israel, we have developed within PB Digital, the technological means to transform existing PDF into accessible PDF/UA documents. First this was introduced as module within PB Digital, but as the need and the scope of the work involving transforming huge numbers of documents increased, we’ve introduced NAGIX as a designated system solution for transforming mass numbers of documents into PDF/UA- with full compliance to laws and regulations regarding accessibility and inclusion.
What does NAGIX Accessible Documents Solution do?
Regulation 35A of the Israeli government Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Law, which mandates that organizations and businesses make accessible every document prepared from October 26, 2017, onwards, came into full effect at the beginning of 2022. From January 1st 2022 onwards, organizations in Israel were required to provide accessible documents to customers—financial reports, public protocols, customer forms, etc.—immediately, in accordance with the principle of inclusivity in accessibility. NAGIX enabled Consist to transform millions of documents into accessible UA-compliant PDFs for most of Israel’s major banks and other leading organizations.
Doing our part to end disability exclusion
Consist’s moto is “Putting people first (KODEM KOL ANASHIM). Aside from our business goals, Consist has been advocating and promoting social causes. Our Company’s ethical code stresses the importance of not only professionalism, but of treating people with the respect and equality. Advancing the rights of people with disability is very close to our heart – and for personal reasons as well. If we can use our technology to advanced this cost, then we want to contribute and do our share to promote accessibility.
What’s our “special sauce” in the realm of accessible documents?
Our “special sauce” is NAGIX’s automatic technology: in order to make millions of existing documents in organizations accessible according to the principle of inclusion, we first map out all the forms and documents that need accessibility in each organization—invoices, customer documents, public protocols, financial reports, etc.—and categorize the documents and forms into families. For each family, we create relevant tags that include: – Paragraphs – Images – Logos – Amounts of money – Dates – Tables – Graphs – And more. We then assign each existing form and document to one of the families, and then define the elements that make up each document in the NAGIX system.
The Design and production phases of accessible PDFs:
Design Phase: In this phase, the NAGIX implementor uses the unique DESIGNER tool of the NAGIX document accessibility system to define master templates for all types of forms and documents existing in the organization. In a large bank or financial institution, for example, the number of templates can reach hundreds or more. After all the organization’s documents are categorized according to the structure of the different document types, the implementer uses NAGIX to create a template for each type of document, consisting of an accessibility tree.
Production Phase of Accessible Documents: After all the organization’s documents are categorized into families and master templates, every customer of the organization will automatically receive an accessible version of every document they need, even when dealing with millions of existing documents. NAGIX identifies the family and type of document the customer wants to receive and knows how to provide the screen reading software with the template and order in which to read the document.
